Presenter: Susanne M. Alexander, Relationship & Marriage Coach; Character Specialist; member of the Bahá’í Faith

To See What Is Scheduled: Upcoming Workshops

Why? (Quotations taken from our service site - www.bahaimarriage.NET)

“Careful preparation for marriage is an essential first step in the preservation of Bahá’í marriage.” (Universal House of Justice: Introduction to Preserving Bahá’í Marriages compilation, item 3)

“…[I]f the friends are not able to maintain harmony within their families, on what other basis do they hope to demonstrate to a skeptical world the efficacy of the pre-eminent character of the Revelation of Bahá’u’lláh? What possible influence could they hope to exert on the development of nations and the establishment of world peace?” (On behalf of the Universal House of Justice: Lights of Guidance, p. 222)

Offerings:

  • For unmarried individuals or couples (age 18/19-29) - "Creating Relationship Excellence" and including either Becoming an Excellent Person or Becoming Character Partners
  • For unmarried individuals (ages 18/19 and up) - "Preparing for a Bahá’í-Based Marriage" focused on marriage preparation using Marriage Can Be Forever--Preparation Counts!
  • For engaged or married couples - "Creating a Pure Gold Marriage" using Pure Gold: Encouraging Character Qualities in Marriage
  • Can be half a day for one audience and half a day for another (but be realistic about how much can be done in 2-3 hours); ideally it would be a full day for each audience
  • Note: Presentations for youth (ages 15-18) - please access materials for communities to use located on http://www.bahairelationships.com/learning.htm
  • Include guidance from the Bahá’í Writings and current guidance from the Universal House of Justice; content often includes key focus topics of friendship skills, character (rectitude of conduct), and chastity and links the skills needed for relationships/marriage with those needed for community-building
  • Include elements of marriage education that are the practical application of the Bahá’í teachings; a document on the potential correlation between principles of the 5-Year plans and relationships and marriage can be accessed here.
  • Require half-day minimum; longer preferred
  • Are available on a wide variety of topics. See Presentations and Workshops for additional topic suggestions; If you wish to have a more general workshop with outreach beyond the Bahá’í community and more interfaith and secular content, please request this.
  • Note: If I am in the area for a few days, some communities may also wish to have me offer a fireside as a travel teacher on the topic of marriage (no charge; there may be the cost of a handout to cover)

Requirements:

  • Sponsorship by a Spiritual Assembly or other Bahá’í institution
  • Transportation costs paid (unless I'm already in the area - see below)
  • A place to stay (it's fine if it's in a home) and food
  • A presenter's fee of $300/day; this is a minimum amount; for communities willing to charge participants for attending or who can afford more, an additional amount is helpful
  • Payment for photocopies and books (1 handout and 1 book per person or couple)
  • Contact person for coordination of details and review of handouts
  • Local handling of registrations; minimum registration of 8 people
  • Local assistance with identifying people to co-facilitate or assist with facilitating small group discussions so that there is an expansion of human resources available on this topic; assistance with inviting married couples to participate on a panel for full-day unmarried individual sessions
  • Local setting of registration costs
  • Space enough for all participants to meet for discussions and for small groups to spread out or for couples to work privately on topics; can be a large home, Bahá’í Center, or rented facility

I'm willing to help guide this process... A document to assist you is Facilitating Marriage Education as Institutions.
